Recommended by the EPA and HomEnviro
http://www.epa.gov/mold/1) Keep Humidity Low
The less humidity in the air, the less moisture, the less mold. The EPA recommends a humidity level of 30-50%.
2) Give Your Roof The Attention It Deserves!
Make sure to keep your roof in good condition. A leaky roof leads to water damage and a moldy house. Make sure to keep gutters cleaned and flowing properly.
3) Clean Up Spills Quickly
Clean up damp or wet materials and surfaces quickly as mold can start to grow in as little as 24-48 hours! If you have a constant wet area, odds are great that the area will grow mold. Dark and wet are the perfect ingredients for mold to grow quickly.
4) Air Conditioners
Keep air conditioner pans clean and drain lines working correctly.
5) Showers
Open the window or run the exhaust fan when showering. Opening a window saves energy!
6) Vent Appliances
Vent appliances that create moisture to the outside when possible.
7) Increase Ventilation
Open windows and run fans when possible.
8) Cold Pipes
Cover cold pipes with insulation.
9) Increase Air Temperature
The EPA says increase air temperature, but we are all trying to reduce our home's air temperature to save energy. What to do? Increasing your insulation may be a better overall solution. A dehumidifier is another option.
10) Keep Water Away from Foundation
Make sure the ground slopes downward away from your home. Water pooling around the foundation of your house is a sure way to increase your chances of mold and water penetration.
11) Sprinklers
Water your plants, not your house. Redirect lawn sprinklers so they do not wet the siding, windows or foundation walls. Overwatering your lawn or plants can create moisture and mold problems even in the summer.
