Why Does My Bathroom
Stay Damp for Hours?
A bathroom should become wet. The problem is when it cannot become dry again. Work out whether moisture is trapped in the air, sitting on surfaces or entering from a leak.
Decide what is actually staying wet
Steam immediately after a shower is expected. Hours of condensation on the mirror and window, wet grout, a damp ceiling, towels that never dry or a persistent musty smell point to different problems. Photograph the wettest areas immediately after showering and again later.
Remove moisture while it is being produced
Run the extractor during the shower and afterward for the period recommended by its manufacturer or controls. If there is no extractor, use the window when it is safe and outdoor conditions are suitable. Keep any designed air inlet or door undercut clear so replacement air can enter.
Give the fan a basic visual check
With dry hands and safe access, look for a blocked or dusty cover and listen for unusual noise. Clean only the user-serviceable cover as the manual directs, with power isolated where required. Do not open wiring, ducts or a ceiling-mounted unit yourself.
Dry the surfaces the fan cannot dry quickly
Use a squeegee or cloth on shower screens, tiles and standing water. Hang towels open rather than folded in a heap, and move wet bath mats so both the mat and floor can dry. This reduces the load; it does not replace working ventilation.
Check the room’s humidity pattern
Place a hygrometer away from direct spray. Compare the reading before a shower, soon afterward and later. The useful sign is recovery toward the room’s normal level, not one universal number of minutes. Persistent high humidity across the home needs a whole-home ventilation check.
Separate condensation from a leak
Condensation usually follows bathing and appears on colder surfaces. A patch that grows when nobody showers, one local wet area, staining below plumbing, peeling paint, a soft wall or a damp floor edge may indicate a leak. Stop treating that as a ventilation-only problem.

Check whether your routine works
- Record humidity and photograph the room before showering.
- Use the extractor correctly and remove standing water afterward.
- Record when the mirror, window, grout and ceiling become visibly dry.
- Repeat for three similar showers.
- If drying improves, keep the routine. If it does not, the ventilation system or building needs checking.

Do not keep wiping over these signs
- Electrician or ventilation technician: the fan does not run, is unusually noisy, trips power, smells hot, or may not vent outdoors.
- Plumber or building professional: damp appears without showering, staining spreads, surfaces soften or a leak is suspected.
- Mold-remediation professional: growth is widespread, hidden, recurrent or involves porous building materials.
- Healthcare professional: anyone develops breathing difficulty, wheezing, worsening asthma or persistent symptoms around the damp room.
Keep photos, humidity readings, the fan model, shower times and notes about when the patch appears. Do not dismantle electrical equipment or mix cleaning chemicals.
