Smell Musty?
If the room smells like a damp towel when the AC starts, do not cover it with fragrance. The useful question is simpler: where is moisture staying?
Notice exactly when the smell appears
Only during the first few minutes? After every cooling cycle? Or even when the unit is off? That pattern helps separate a briefly damp unit from a smell that keeps returning.
Check the filter—but do not stop there
A dusty filter can hold odors and restrict airflow. Clean or replace it exactly as the manufacturer recommends. If the smell returns quickly, the source may be deeper inside.
Look for the moisture clue
Cooling creates condensation. A dirty drip pan, blocked drain or damp internal surface can keep moisture where it should not stay. Water marks, dripping indoors or a wet wall need attention.
Dry the unit the way its manual recommends
Some systems have a self-clean, coil-dry or fan-only routine. Use the feature described for your model rather than copying a universal social-media trick.
Know when to stop cleaning it yourself
