New to Air Conditioning?
7 Things Every Family Should Know

The installer leaves, the room finally feels cool—and then the questions begin. Here is how to cool a family home without trapping odors, moisture or stale air.

24°COOLING ≠ FRESH AIR
01

Air conditioning does not usually bring fresh air inside

Most household systems recirculate the air already in the room. A bedroom can feel cool and still become stuffy overnight. Ventilate briefly when outdoor conditions are suitable, then close the windows before cooling again.

02

Keep windows closed while the unit is actively cooling

Open windows bring warm or humid outdoor air into a room the system is trying to cool. Ventilation and cooling are both useful; they simply work better at different times.

03

A musty smell often begins with moisture

Moisture can remain inside the unit after cooling stops. Start with the filter and the manufacturer’s drying instructions. If odor returns quickly or water leaks indoors, arrange an inspection.

04

A colder setting does not necessarily cool faster

An extremely low setting often makes the system run longer. Shade sun-facing windows first, choose a comfortable setting and give the room time to respond.

05

Measure the room instead of relying only on how it feels

A small thermometer and hygrometer helps separate heat from humidity. Place it away from direct airflow and sunlight, then watch the pattern before, during and after cooling.

06

A child’s bedroom needs its own routine

Cool and ventilate the room before bedtime when outdoor conditions allow. Keep direct cold airflow away from the bed and remember that cooling is not the same as ventilation.

07

Clean the filter, but know when the problem is deeper

A filter cannot fix every odor, drainage problem or dirty internal component. Seek service for indoor leaks, burning smells, repeated mustiness, unusual noise or reduced airflow.

SAVE THIS ROUTINE

Seven small steps

  1. Shade the room before it becomes hot.
  2. Ventilate when outdoor conditions are suitable.
  3. Close windows while actively cooling.
  4. Keep direct airflow away from the bed.
  5. Check temperature and humidity patterns.
  6. Follow the filter and drying instructions.
  7. Arrange service when odor or leakage persists.
